A journal of aesthetic atmosphere & visual presence

A space for visual thought

This is a space attuned to the senses and the quiet intricacies of perception, moving through music, books, nature, and the layered worlds of art, design, architecture and interiors. It pays attention to textures, the subtleties of scent and sound, and the shifting ambiance and moods that shape our experience of life.

  • “We perceive atmosphere through our emotional sensibility – a form of perception that works incredibly quickly and which we humans evidently need to help us survive”.

    Peter Zumthor, Atmospheres, page 13.

Peter Zumthor is unique in the field of architecture which prioritizes the sensory experience, atmospheric quality, and material integrity over mere visual form, often described as a master of "sensuous minimalism".

  • “You shall never find the borders of the soul, even after traveling on every road.”

Heraclitus, Hermann Schmitz, Atmospheres, page 31.

Hermann Schmitz was a German philosopher (1928–2021) known for his work on the phenomenology of emotions and moods. In his book Atmospheres, he explores how emotional and spatial atmospheres shape human perception and experience.

  • “Not everything is an athmosphere.”

Damini Luederitz, inspired by Tonino Griffero, Atmospheres (2014), p. 12

Tonino Griffero is an Italian philosopher who studies atmospheres and explains that only some feelings in a space count as an atmosphere.

  • “Vision reveals what the touch already knows.”

Juhani Pallasmaa, The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses (2005), summarizing the phenomenological insight that vision is rooted in touch.
